The Understudy

A novel · Imogen Vance

An understudy finally goes on when the lead vanishes — then fan mail starts arriving, addressed to the missing woman as though she never left. Backstage psychological suspense: a dressing-room mirror, a costume on a hanger, and a city that refuses to stop writing to a woman who is no longer there.

The first letter arrived on her third night in the role, addressed in a hand she did not know, to a name that was not hers, care of a theater that had already printed the correction. The envelope had been opened once. She opened it again.
